Hyundai recalls nearly 88,000 vehicles due to fire risk

Hyundai is recalling 87,900 cars in the United States because a short circuit could cause an engine fire even when not in use.

The 87,900 vehicles recalled are Hyundai Sonata 2006 and Azera 2006-2011 models.

The cause of the recall is that water or moisture can penetrate the ABS anti-lock braking module, causing a short circuit that can burn the engine compartment even when the vehicle is turned off.

One car in South Korea reportedly had an overheating module and one caught fire in the United States, but fortunately no one was injured.

Hyundai owners in the US whose vehicles are on the recall list will be notified starting February 23. Before that, dealers will reset the short circuit fault on the vehicle to prevent the vehicle from short-circuiting when the engine is turned off.

It is not yet clear whether Sonata and Azera models in other markets also have the above error.

In Vietnam, Hyundai does not import or sell the Azera model, but only the Sonata model. However, the current Hyundai Sonata models are all new models that are not in the year of manufacture that needs to be recalled.
