In a speech on September 23 before the United Nations General Assembly, Indonesian Vice President Jusuf Kalla Muhammad said the United Nations needs to reform to become stronger and more relevant to the challenges of the 21st century and real-life developments.

Among the issues being faced, Mr. Kalla highlighted the migration crisis caused by conflicts in Syria, Yemen, Iraq and other parts of the world, along with climate change, unregulated fishing and high-tech crime.

Mr. Kalla also stressed that Indonesia will commit to increasing its peacekeeping force to 4,000 personnel by 2019 and do its utmost in the fight against terrorism globally.

“As the world’s most populous Muslim country, Indonesia has shown that it always promotes democracy, tolerance and peace through a modern Islam and women are empowered equally,” Mr. Kalla also said.

The selection of non-permanent members of the United Nations Security Council for the 2019-2020 period will be carried out in mid-2019. In addition to Indonesia, the Asia-Pacific region has two other candidates: India and Vietnam.
