In the past 10 days, most of the victims of IS have been women and children. The most recent photos show the bodies of 30 people, mostly children and young men, lying on a bloody street. In February, the extremist Islamic jihadists took over Al-Anbar province – a province stretching from the Iraqi capital Baghdad to Syria. According to local authorities, in eastern Iraq, in Salahuddin province, the jihadists kidnapped dozens of members of the Joubour tribe. In recent times, the Joubour tribe has taken up arms to fight against IS.
Authorities fear a rise in attacks by Islamic extremists targeting Shiites, who are considered heretics by the Islamic State (IS). There have been a number of recent IS attacks on Shiite pilgrims visiting the holy city of Karbala. On Saturday, 24 people were killed in Baghdad. On Sunday, another 13 pilgrims were killed in an attack southwest of the capital.
Iraqi police said, “The danger has become greater in recent times. Terrorism has never been as prevalent as it is now.” The anniversary of Hussein’s death is the most important holiday for Shiites. On this occasion, Shiites will make a pilgrimage to the city of Karbala where Hussein was beheaded.
