(Baonghean.vn) - On December 31, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had a phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin to discuss the conflict in Syria. The call took place as the United Nations Security Council passed a resolution approving a ceasefire in Syria sponsored by Russia and Türkiye.

The Israeli and Russian leaders discussed regional developments, with a focus on the war in Syria and continued security cooperation in the region, a statement from Prime Minister Netanyahu's office said.

Both Moscow and Ankara say the new ceasefire in Syria is meant to pave the way for peace talks scheduled for next month in the Kazakh capital Astana, which will also include Iran. The discussions are meant to complement, not replace, UN-sponsored peace efforts in Syria.

The call came as the 15-member UN Security Council unanimously adopted a resolution endorsing the latest ceasefire in Syria. The resolution also welcomed plans for talks in Kazakhstan between the Syrian government and the opposition, which are seen as a preparatory step for the resumption of UN-sponsored peace talks in Geneva scheduled for February.
