On February 12, an explosion occurred inside a fireworks factory in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu, killing at least 15 people and injuring 26 others.

Indian authorities said the fireworks factory is located in Acchankulam village, more than 450km from Chennai city - the capital of the state of Tamil Nadu. The explosion occurred when workers were mixing chemicals to make fireworks. There were about 50 people working inside the factory at the time, some of whom were seriously injured. The cause of the explosion is not yet known and an investigation is underway. In September 2020, an explosion at a fireworks factory in the state of Tamil Nadu left nine people dead and injured.

Fireworks manufacturing is a big business in India as fireworks are used frequently in festivals and weddings. Failure to comply with safety regulations is believed to be the main cause of explosions that have resulted in loss of life and property./.
