The cause of the explosion is not yet known and an investigation is underway. In September 2020, an explosion at a fireworks factory in the state of Tamil Nadu also killed 9 people.

Fireworks manufacturing is a big business in India as fireworks are used frequently in festivals and weddings. Failure to comply with safety regulations is believed to be the main cause of explosions that have caused loss of life and property./.
