Hung wore a mask to avoid detection when he murdered Ms. Mua, but he was accidentally caught on a resident's camera sitting behind the victim's motorbike.

At noon nearly a year ago, Thai Nguyen Provincial Police received information that a woman had died with multiple injuries in a garden in Dau Cau residential group (Ba Hang ward, Pho Yen town). The authorities determined that it was a murder case with signs of robbery. The victim had wounds from behind caused by a sharp object.

The provincial board of directors has assigned the Criminal Police Department to take the lead in investigating the victim's identity and solving the case. The department has mobilized dozens of detectives to coordinate with professional units to take part in the investigation.

Lieutenant Colonel Nguyen Tien Thinh (Head of the Criminal Investigation Department) and the forensic agency examined the scene and the body of the unfortunate woman. "We determined that the victim was not a local," Mr. Thinh said.

The detectives searched for the whereabouts of the young woman, and on the other hand collected traces and details related to the case. Initially, the investigation encountered many difficulties, because the perpetrator was like a "ghost", leaving no traces at the scene.

A task force was ordered to check the road, within a 300m radius, from where the woman's body was discovered. Other reconnaissance teams screened for people with criminal records, drug addicts in Pho Yen town and in the province.

The detectives went to each house near the scene that had a security camera system installed, rewinding the time before and when the victim was discovered. After a day of following this direction, a security camera of a house recorded the image of a woman driving a motorbike (clothed similar to the victim) carrying behind her a young man wearing a dark shirt, helmet and mask.

The camera captured the image about half an hour before the victim's body was discovered. The question for the detectives is, who is the unfortunate woman, what is her relationship with the young man sitting behind her, is she the perpetrator of this particularly serious murder?

The initial knot about the victim's identity was untied when the media published images of a woman driving a motorbike, carrying a young man. The police later identified her as Tran Thi Mua (35 years old, from Bac Ninh), a motorbike taxi driver. At the same time, the family of the unfortunate person also came to confirm that the woman was their relative. The family said that Ms. Mua's motorbike and iPhone were no longer there.

At that time, the detectives reconstructed the journey from where Ms. Mua went (Yen Phong district, Bac Ninh) to the area where the body of the unfortunate person was found. Before being murdered, Ms. Mua was hired by a male passenger to take her from Yen Phong. The authorities determined that the perpetrator might be a resident of Pho Yen town.

A reconnaissance team was assigned to search for the victim’s motorbike and discovered the evidence at a pawn shop in the province. After more than three days of searching (from November 7 to November 10, 2017), the police arrested the perpetrator Nguyen Quang Hung at a motel in Yen Phong district (Bac Ninh province).

Murderer Nguyen Quang Hung.

The perpetrator paid for the crime he committed against the young woman.

Hung was a drug addict, unemployed and had been married twice. He had no criminal record. On November 7, 2017, Hung traveled from his hometown (Pho Yen town) to Yen Phong district to visit his girlfriend but did not meet her.

Having no money, he came up with the idea of robbing and used the fruit knife he brought with him to commit the crime. He hired Ms. Mua to drive him from Yen Phong to the Soc Son intersection (Hanoi). After that, he asked Ms. Mua to drive him to his house and through the tree-covered hill area near the 91 Military Hospital. Sitting in the back, Hung pulled out a knife and attacked the victim multiple times, causing her to die on the spot.

Hung robbed the victim's phone and motorbike, pawned them for 3.5 million VND, then returned to his girlfriend's rented room in Yen Phong district to hide.

For the crimes of Murder and Robbery, Hung was sentenced to death by the People's Court of Thai Nguyen province.
