According to investigation documents, in the early morning of May 9, Kien climbed over the fence of the villa and broke into Ms. Quy's yard on Ton That Thuyet Street (Song Da urban area, Tran Phu ward, Ha Tinh city). Waiting until the maid opened the door to wash clothes, Kien rushed in with a knife and demanded to be taken to the second floor. There, he entered the room of the female homeowner whose husband was away, forcing her to open the safe and give him money.
Although he took several tens of millions of dong, when he discovered a savings book in the safe, Kien asked Ms. Quy to take a leave of absence that morning and go to the bank to withdraw the money, saying, "I have a heart condition and must give one billion dong. This amount of money is not enough to treat the disease."
To avoid the female homeowner calling the police, Kien forced her to continuously call via FaceTime, and on the way, he had to record a video to send back. He threatened that if Ms. Quy did not comply, he would "deal with" the four hostages in the house: two children, her father-in-law (about 60 years old) and the maid.At a bank in Ha Tinh, Ms. Quy continued filming the procedure to withdraw money and "transmit messages" as requested. However, while writing the note, she wrote down the phone number of her father, Major General of Police Tran Cong Truong, and gave it to the bank staff, asking them to report that she was in danger.
The bank then called this number, General Truong was in Ha Tinh so they called two more police officers to assist.
Arriving at his daughter's house, seeing the robber holding his father-in-law and the hostages in the bathroom with their backs turned, Mr. Truong rushed in, grabbed his arms, and took away his weapon. Kien panicked and struggled, but was kicked into the bathroom door. The two policemen joined forces and subdued the robber.
Kien said he was an international student in China, currently on break back home, and would soon defend his master's thesis in economics. Because he was upset about his parents' love life, he came up with the idea of robbing a large sum of money to take his mother to a far away place to live.
