Blood sugar control prevents complications for diabetic patients

(Baonghean) - Vinamilk has just coordinated with the Diabetes Endocrine Association to organize a scientific conference with the theme "Update on treatment and nutrition for diabetic patients" in Hanoi.

The program was attended by Prof. Dr. Thai Hong Quang, President of the Vietnam Endocrinology and Diabetes Association, along with more than 100 doctors and medical staff at endocrinology and diabetes treatment units in major hospitals in the capital.

According to Professor Thai Hong Quang, Vietnam is a country with a rapidly increasing rate of diabetes, accounting for nearly 5% of the population (as of the end of 2016), and the disease is the fourth leading cause of death. Unscientific lifestyle, lack of exercise, and improper diet are the main causes of the rapid increase in the rate of type 2 diabetes. If blood sugar is not well controlled, diabetes can easily lead to dangerous complications such as: cardiovascular, kidney, eye, neurological complications, infections, etc.

On the occasion of World Diabetes Day, November 14, the Diabetes Endocrine Association in collaboration with Vinamilk organized a conference to update medical staff on knowledge about treatment and nutrition for diabetic patients.

At the conference, Associate Professor, Dr. Vu Bich Nga, General Secretary of the Diabetes Endocrinology Association, Director of the Institute of Diabetes and Metabolic Disorders, updated new trends in diabetes treatment for patients. Adherence to a drug regimen is extremely important to help patients control blood glucose, increase insulin secretion, increase resistance, etc., thereby reducing the risk of acute and chronic complications.

In addition to drug treatment and physical exercise, a reasonable diet plays a very important role in helping diabetic patients stabilize blood sugar levels. Especially if detected early in the preclinical stage, with just a combination of a reasonable diet and physical activity, the patient may not need to use drug therapy.

Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Thanh Cho, former Head of the Nutrition Department of Hospital 103, Military Medical Academy, shared the principles of nutritional treatment for diabetic patients such as: balancing protein: fat: sugar to balance the total daily calories according to the body's needs, should divide meals into small portions (5-6 meals/day), especially need to choose foods with low glycemic index (GI <= 55), to help control blood sugar effectively and prevent complications.
