(Baonghean.vn) - With many years of experience, the people of Na Ni village, Huoi Tu commune, Ky Son have come up with many simple but effective remedies to prevent and control foot-and-mouth disease and septicemia in buffaloes and cows.

The distance from Muong Xen center to Huoi Tu commune is more than 25 km, and from Huoi Tu commune center to Na Ni village, it takes more than 1 hour by motorbike with steep roads on the mountainside, jagged rocks. Also because the area is far from the center, traveling is difficult, so the work of propaganda and support for people in preventing and fighting diseases in livestock, poultry, especially buffalo and cow herds faces many difficulties.
Disease prevention thanks to grapefruit peel
Na Ni village chief Vu Va Gio said that every year, foot and mouth disease and anthrax in cattle cause considerable damage to people in villages in Huoi Tu commune, including Na Ni village. Therefore, disease prevention and control for livestock is extremely important. In addition to implementing measures propagated and instructed by veterinary officers, Na Ni villagers have also learned very effective folk remedies.

Na Ni village chief Vu Va Gio said that the whole village has more than 350 buffaloes and cows. For many years, the epidemics in the buffaloes and cows of Na Ni village have been controlled, with little impact because the people have implemented two methods of disease prevention and treatment.

To prevent diseases in buffaloes and cows, especially foot and mouth disease, the family of the village chief Vu Va Gio as well as the people of Na Ni often use grapefruit as a special remedy, which is both simple and inexpensive. “Every family in the village has a grapefruit tree, it is easy to find. Just be diligent in training the buffaloes and cows to eat grapefruit peel and grapefruit fruit” – said Mr. Vu Va Gio.

Through many years of implementing the above method, it has been shown that regularly feeding buffalo and cows grapefruit peel has significantly increased the resistance of these animals to diseases, with almost no disease occurrence.

Na Ni village has 114 households with more than 450 people living mainly by growing rice and hunting, gathering agricultural products from the forest. For the people of Na Ni village as well as other villages of Ky Son district, raising buffalo and cows has become a traditional occupation, both for agricultural production and creating a source of income for the villagers from trading breeding buffalo and cows and beef buffalo and cows.

Foot and mouth disease is a disease caused by a virus. Common symptoms are high fever (over 42oC), loss of appetite, blisters developing on the feet and mouth (tongue, lips and teeth). Initially the blisters are small, then they get bigger, burst and form ulcers, causing the animal to lose its hoof.

Medicine from lemongrass
Sharing their experience in treating septicemia in buffaloes and cows, Na Ni villagers said that the remedy from lemongrass is very effective. Accordingly, when buffaloes and cows are found to have septicemia, take about half a kilo of fresh lemongrass along with a few hot peppers, chop them up, crush them, and put them in 1 liter of boiled water to cool. Use that water to rub and massage the buffaloes and cows from the neck, shoulders down to the legs. Then, use the sharp needle of a syringe for livestock to puncture 3 holes through the skin at the two front knee positions and at the hump on the buffaloes and cows' backs.

If applied this way, after 2-3 hours if you see the buffalo or cow sweat from the nose, the disease will be cured. If you do not see sweat or discharge, the disease is too severe, the animal will certainly die. Therefore, according to the experience of the people, it is necessary to pay attention to early detection of the disease, the treatment will be more effective.

Pasteurellosis is a disease that often occurs in the spring and summer, the main cause is bacteria, they often penetrate through contact between healthy buffaloes and cows with infected ones. The incubation period is from 12 to 48 hours, buffaloes and cows often show signs of fatigue, high fever, shortness of breath, runny nose, drooling...
