Strange 1,000-year-old mummy wearing modern 'sneakers'
Mongolian researchers are investigating the mysteries surrounding the more than 1,000-year-old mummy of a woman wearing shoes identical to modern Adidas sneakers.
The mummy of a Mongolian woman became famous in April 2016 thanks to her modern-style shoes that looked very much like sneakers. Over the next 12 months, scientists tried to learn more about the mysterious mummy, who was in her 30s or 40s. The woman's shoes were carefully cleaned, with new images published on April 12 by the Siberian Times.
Experts at the Mongolian Cultural Heritage Center believe the woman died 1,100 years ago from a severe head injury. Preliminary examinations indicate that a severe blow to the facial bones was most likely the cause of death.

The high altitude and cold weather helped preserve both the woman’s body and her burial belongings, including the Shilajit cloak, made of thick material ranging in color from white to dark brown, that covered her body. Some of her skin and hair remained on the felt-wrapped mummy.
The woman was buried with several objects, including a handbag, four sets of clothes, a mirror, a comb, and a knife. Her horse and saddle were also buried with her and were found to be in good condition. Although the woman owned many luxury items, scientists believe that she was just an ordinary person, not a member of the nobility or royalty.
The grave was excavated at an altitude of 2,803m and the woman was from the Turkik community. A group of shepherds alerted archaeologists at the Khovd city museum when they discovered the grave.
