This year's exam season left a special mark on class 9A, Ton Quang Phiet Secondary School (formerly Thanh Chuong District) when more than 30 students passed the entrance exam to specialized schools. This is also an unprecedented record at this school with a rich tradition of studiousness.

Special faces

Tran Bao Trang is an outstanding face of class 9A, because she is the only candidate to score 17.5 points and is the Valedictorian of the Math class, Phan Boi Chau High School for the Gifted this year. Receiving this result, Trang was really surprised, because for her, the Math class is always considered a class that gathers many excellent students in the whole province. After finishing the exam, Trang herself was quite confident about the result, but she never thought she would be Tscienceof the exam.

In class 9A, Trang is a new member because she transferred to the school at the beginning of grade 9. Before that, Trang studied at Phong Thinh Primary and Secondary School, a village school located quite far from the center. Trang's biggest turning point was in grade 8, when she participated in the District Excellent Student Competition in 2 subjects: Math and English. In particular, in Math, she was the valedictorian with a near-perfect score of 19.5/20 points. This is also the reason why at the beginning of grade 9, she was added to the list of class 9A, Ton Quang Phiet Secondary School, a key school in Thanh Chuong district (old).

The new school, with dedicated teachers and studying in a group of enthusiastic people, helped Trang develop her strengths. At the Provincial Excellent Student Competition in grade 9, she won second prize in provincial Math. This was also the premise for Trang to later break through and achieve high results in the entrance exam to Phan Boi Chau High School for the Gifted. Trang's secret to studying is quite simple: being diligent, mastering the knowledge in class, and practicing a lot. Because she loves Math, Trang is not afraid of challenges and finds joy in difficult Math problems, with many new solutions.

Among the students admitted to Phan Boi Chau High School for the Gifted this year from class 9A, Ton Quang Phiet Secondary School, are twin sisters Nguyen Thuong Huyen and Nguyen Thuong Hao. Thuong Huyen was admitted to the History class, Thuong Hao was admitted to the Math 2 class. In grade 9, Huyen won second prize in the provincial Literature competition and Hao won second prize in Chemistry.

Talking about her children, Ms. Tran Thi Tuyet said: I am a preschool teacher, my husband is a freelancer so I don't have much time for my children. Luckily, my two children are studious, hard-working, obedient and have a high sense of self-study. When we decided to take the entrance exam to Phan Boi Chau High School for the Gifted, we decided to let our children try their luck and thought that the chance of passing was not high. However, they always set goals for themselves and strive to realize their dreams.

I studied and did a lot of exercises, bought a lot of books and documents for reference. However, before each exam, I was worried, even affecting my health. Later, I realized that if I put too much pressure on myself, I would not get good results, and moreover, my score would go down. The important thing is to master the knowledge, practice many different types of exercises. If I encounter a difficult problem, I am ready to ask my teachers, friends and can look it up online to find different ways to solve it...

In contrast to her younger sister, Thuong Huyen chose a light way of studying and she considered studying social subjects as a discovery. Huyen's biggest regret in this year's exam was that she could not get into the Literature class as she had wished. However, she believes that getting into the History class was a "fate" and she will study this subject well, try to achieve high results, and leave a mark for her 3 years of studying at Phan Boi Chau High School for the Gifted.

Unprecedented achievement

This year's admission season, class 9A, Ton Quang Phiet Secondary School has made an unprecedented achievement when 17 students were admitted to Phan Boi Chau High School for the Gifted and 16 students were admitted to Vinh University High School for the Gifted, many students were admitted to 2 schools. In the list of admitted students of the class, it is quite impressive that 5 students were admitted to the Math 1 specialized class; 3 students were admitted to the Math 2 specialized class; 2 students were admitted to the Physics specialized class. In addition, many students were admitted to the English, Korean, and History specialized classes.

Receiving this result, teacher Nguyen Ngoc Nam - Head of the class shared: I am really happy because this is an unprecedented achievement of the school. Previously, in the Provincial Excellent Student Competition in grade 9, we had 20 students winning prizes in all subjects and that was a result beyond expectations. After this exam, many students in the class set a goal of entering specialized schools and we determined to accompany them, because this is a very difficult exam, highly competitive, requiring students to have real ability.

Last school year, class 9A was a selective class of Ton Quang Phiet Secondary School. However, while in the past, classes were often divided according to ability such as Literature and Math classes, class 9A was oriented to develop all subjects equally. Therefore, in the future, in the teaching process, in order to discover the talents and strengths of each student, teachers must be attentive and understanding. In addition, teachers are also the ones who fan the flames and encourage to build a learning movement. More importantly, teachers must be truly dedicated, responsible, and constantly improve their expertise to support students in teaching and reviewing.

The specialized exam is very different from the gifted student exam and if students have a good learning environment and good teachers to nurture them, they will have many opportunities. However, for students in our school, they do not have the conditions to review thoroughly like those in favorable areas and their learning mainly comes from school. To accompany students, I and many other colleagues have to make efforts to improve their expertise, find different sources of documents and spend a lot of time reviewing with students. In addition, I also appreciate the students' self-study awareness. Perhaps, the more difficult it is, the more motivated they are to study and try.

Talking about the school's achievements in the past school year, teacher Nguyen Trong Dat - Principal of the school said: To encourage the learning movement, every year the school puts the target of having 18 - 20% of students pass the entrance exam to specialized schools in the Resolution of the Party cell. On that basis, the school has a strategy for each course, from selecting the teaching staff, signing the emulation commitment, having a reward policy for teachers with many students achieving high achievements... The school innovates in the form of teaching so that students can develop their abilities, build emulation movements, create motivation for students to try and nurture their dreams right from the beginning of entering the school.

As for the last course, although this was the first course to study and take exams according to the 2018 General Education Program and teaching and learning faced many difficulties in the context of the whole industry implementing Circular 29 on extra teaching and learning, the school was still determined to compete in teaching well and studying well. In particular, from the beginning of the second semester, all grade 9 teachers volunteered to teach extra for free until the exam date so as not to interrupt their studies and help students have a successful exam season.

We are very happy with the results that the students have achieved. Their success is a great gift from the teachers and a motivation for generations of students of the school to constantly strive, continuing the tradition of studiousness of the homeland.
