On January 28, Quang Binh police said they had just arrested Chau Thi Bich Hong (39 years old, Kien Giang) and Tran Thi Thuy Huong (34 years old, Ho Chi Minh City) on charges of being involved in a money fraud ring via social networks organized by foreigners.

Hong and Huong said they knew many people of color who came to Vietnam for tourism and were asked to open bank accounts. Huong opened seven ATM cards, while Hong opened 13 ATM cards. After depositing money into their accounts, they withdrew it and were paid 3-5%.

Previously, Quang Binh authorities received a report from a 49-year-old woman residing in Nong Truong Viet Trung town (Bo Trach district) about being scammed out of VND2 billion by an acquaintance on social media - money she had saved after 14 years of working abroad. Accordingly, after two months of meeting an African tourist on Facebook, she repeatedly sent money to her "boyfriend" to help settle an investment project abroad. In return, she was promised to be paid 2-3 times the amount she spent.

Quang Binh police, when investigating, determined that not only this woman, but many local people were also scammed out of a total of five billion VND. The scam group is suspected to be related to Huong and Hong's jobs.
