What to do to avoid unemployment after graduation?

May 31, 2016 07:47

Freshmen just entering school are enough to realize the reason for unemployment - the cause is the students themselves.

According to statistics, in 2015 alone, there were about 200,000 unemployed workers with bachelor's degrees or higher. And what is even more alarming is that this number is increasing every year. So what is the reason, is it the scarcity of jobs, the employer or the quality of training? The biggest reason that only a first-year student just entering school can realize is the reason is the student himself.

Unemployment is a must...

That was the immediate statement of Nguyen Thi Thuy Dung - a first-year student at Da Nang University of Education, who frankly shared when asked what she thought about the current unemployment situation of students after graduation. Dung said: "I see that students nowadays keep blaming unemployment and neglecting their studies or studying "just for the sake of it" to get a degree. Many students are like that, even I used to be like that." Just a first-year female student can see that the leading cause of the current unemployment situation is not meeting the needs of employers. It is not due to poor training quality, but first of all, it must be mentioned that it is the "incompetence" of the students themselves.

Ms. Pham Thi Huong - Lecturer at Da Nang University of Education shared: "Most students go to school with the mentality of "taking attendance" rather than improving their knowledge. Although according to the credit training regulations, students have the right to miss a certain number of classes, however, almost all schools have to have regulations on calculating attendance points, which reflects the reality of students studying in a "coping" way. I think that is the main cause of unemployment". There are many "half-laughing, half-crying" stories of students going to interviews after graduation, lacking in both expertise and professionalism, and many of the students' CVs make employers "disappointed".

You must be ready to start a business.

The phrase "start-up" is considered the top criteria for students in developed countries around the world. Most recently, in the emerging economy of China, about 4,000 new companies are established every day, and the government invested 336 billion USD in 2015 alone for young people's start-up projects. Why don't we take the initiative to find a job? Right from the classroom, you need to cultivate knowledge and skills, always be ready for graduation day and start with a start-up project. Many students graduate without specialized knowledge or grasp theory but cannot apply it, so right now you need to both study and work.

The lecture hall is a place to orient your career, not a place to find a job. A student holding a bachelor's degree in hand, going everywhere but no employer accepts, have you ever asked yourself why? Because you are not ready for work. Usually, it takes a few years for each student to find a stable job, because after graduating, you are considered to be starting over. Only grasping theory, no professional skills, poor in interviews and not mentally ready for work. If you are ready, young startup investment projects in Vietnam always need you, you must be proactive in your own work before thinking about applying for a job.

Overcoming shortcomings in expertise, professionalism... and English

Ms. Phan Thi Nga - Deputy Head of the Faculty of Foreign Languages - Information Technology, Da Nang University of Physical Education and Sports said: "Students at the school are still lacking in foreign language expertise. General statistics show that most of them only achieve average levels even though the foreign language requirements at the school are not too strict. Although many measures have been put forward, the results are still limited." This is the common situation of students across the country.

Faced with the economic integration and most recently the TPP agreement, Vietnam is facing many major challenges, among which the challenge of human resources meeting professional requirements is a "difficult problem" for education. The Information Technology (IT) industry is the industry that is most in need of human resources, but there is no shortage of IT graduates in our country. So why? Employers need qualified human resources, not "degree-holding" human resources. Another requirement is... skills. Many bachelors and masters go to interviews but make employers "shake their heads", CV writing skills are almost non-existent, communication skills are still shy and professional requirements are very rare. These are the reasons leading to the shortage of human resources but still having to "shake their heads" from employers.

Don't turn down a job yourself.

Many students are "delusional" about their bachelor's degrees, especially at large universities. The mentality of bachelors is to work according to the level of the degree, after graduating from university, it is "impossible" to work as an employee. They are "delusional" about their degrees and refuse job opportunities. You must know that we have to start from "zero", if you have real ability, you will have the opportunity to develop your work. Another reason is the "must go to university" mentality of not only students but also pressure from family. A student at Da Nang University of Technology shared: "I really want to start a business, not as an engineer like the profession I am studying. If I graduate as an engineer and have to work as a worker, it would be terrible, and if I switch to business, it would be a waste of 5 years of university without majoring in it. But the trend now is to go to university, and the future can be considered later." We are facing the reality of "too many teachers and not enough workers" because of the mentality of "must go to university" and must work according to "degree". The "too high" requirements of students are the reason why you are still unemployed.

Don't always complain and blame

That is what students "usually do" to cover up their laziness. Always blame "no quota" then "training but no guaranteed output". Graduating and "waiting" for employers. Always complaining about not having a job, that is what makes students bury themselves deeper into the risk of unemployment. Blaming the lack of job opportunities, blaming the quality of education... but no one has blamed themselves. Graduating with a degree on paper, not a degree of "knowledge" in their heads. Waiting for "easy, high-paying" jobs and always wanting to work for the "government" for stability, but few people know that they are harming themselves. The current general situation is Unemployment - Complaining, neglecting education - and of course the consequence later is unemployment, so the unemployment rate will increase day by day.

Admittedly, there are many reasons for the current growing unemployment. But before "dissecting" the underlying causes, we need to "clearly identify" the cause right in front of us. That is the incompetence of students right in the classroom. That is why there are students who have found jobs and stable incomes right from their studies, while many other students graduate but still cannot find a job. Don't graduate with a "paper" degree.
