Laos: Hundreds of Xieng Khouang residents suffer from strange disease

Officials from the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Lao Ministry of Health are on their way to Xieng Khouang province in northern Laos to determine the cause of a mysterious disease that has sickened hundreds of people in the province, the Laotian newspaper Vientiane Times reported.

The newspaper quoted a health official in Xieng Khouang province as saying that about 300 people had contracted the disease but no one had died from it.

The first patients with symptoms began appearing in April, mostly in Paek County. Typical symptoms of the disease include fever, vomiting, yellow eyes, and weakness.

The official also said that Xieng Khouang provincial hospital, designed for 100 beds, is seriously overloaded.

Many patients had to lie in the corridors and outside the hospital, while some were transferred to the capital Vientiane.

According to the Vientiane Times, doctors at Xieng Khouang Provincial Hospital have not yet diagnosed the cause of the disease. The Xieng Khouang Provincial Health Department has asked the Lao Ministry of Health to help determine the cause.

Xieng Khouang is a province in northern Laos that borders Nghe An province of Vietnam.
