Old farmer raises thousands of eels in plastic cans, earns high profits
30 liter plastic cans, with holes punched around them. Then, the plastic cans are placed in the river, the eels are released into the river and raised for about 8 months before being harvested. Thousands of eels are raised in plastic cans like this, bringing high profits to an old farmer in the West.
Talking to PV. VietNamNet, Mr. Thinh said that nearly 10 years ago, he started raising eels but was not successful. “At first, I raised eels in cement tanks but failed many times, losing tens of millions of dong. After a long period of research, in 2013, I came up with a way to raise eels in plastic cans in a natural water environment and succeeded,” Mr. Thinh shared.
Mr. Thinh uses 30-liter plastic cans, priced at about 15,000 VND/can, rectangular, with holes punched around them. Then, he puts the plastic cans in the river, releases the eel fry into them and raises them for about 8 months before harvesting.

"On average, a plastic can can raise about 1kg of eel. Each can can yield an average of 16kg of eel, with a selling price of 180,000-200,000 VND/kg, after deducting expenses, the profit is about 1.9 million VND. With more than 80 cans of eel being raised this time, I can earn more than 100 million VND," said Mr. Thinh.
The special thing inside the plastic can is the food bag hanging on the lid.
According to observations, the bag is designed with elastic fabric with a length of 20cm, width of 12cm, with many holes around, the size depends on the size of the eel. According to Mr. Thinh, the reason the food bag is designed like that is to save money.
In addition, this is also convenient for monitoring the growth of eels based on the amount of food left in the bag, thereby having better care directions. The food he uses for eels is mainly ground snails mixed with 30-40% pellets.
In addition, Mr. Thinh also revealed that to prevent eels from getting sick and dying, they must be tamed with traditional medicine, this is the "secret" he researched himself. With this method of raising in plastic cans, the farmer does not need to change the water for the eels, it saves time and effort in caring for them, saves food and is environmentally friendly. After about 8 months of raising, the eels will reach a weight of 300-400 grams and can be harvested.
