The United Nations on August 29 will continue the third round of secret balloting to find a successor to Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, who is about to end his term after two terms.

The 15 member countries of the United Nations Security Council will vote for one of 10 candidates, with the choice of three votes: "confidence", "no confidence" and "no opinion".

There are currently 10 candidates, 5 women and 5 men, running for the position. Former Portuguese Prime Minister Antonio Guterres is the leader after the second round of voting on August 5. Former Serbian Foreign Minister Vuk Jeremic is in second place.

According to regulations, the process of electing the Secretary-General takes place at secret ballots of the Security Council until this highest authority in the United Nations nominates a single candidate for approval by the General Assembly.

The UN Security Council's vote of confidence is also said to allow candidates to see their level of credibility, and to be able to withdraw if they feel they do not receive much support.

However, the final decision still belongs to the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council, so the process of selecting a single candidate will face many difficulties due to being politicized and influenced by bilateral relations as well as the individual agendas of the five member countries./.
