Sentenced for accepting to pay off debt with drugs
(Baonghean.vn) - On February 26, Ky Son District People's Court opened the first instance trial of defendant Le Trung Kien (born 1989), residing in Con Vang block, Quang Phong ward, Thai Hoa town, for the crime of "Illegal possession of narcotics" as prescribed in Article 249 of the Penal Code.

According to the indictment, on the evening of September 24, 2018, Kien (who was working in Laos at the time) went to Luang Prabang bus station (Laos) to catch a bus back to Vietnam. When he arrived, because there was no bus, Kien rented a room at the bus station to sleep. There, Kien met a young Vietnamese man named Duyen. Duyen then asked Kien to borrow 100,000 Lao Kip and Kien agreed.
At about 2:00 a.m. on September 25, 2018, Duyen returned to see Kien and said she had no money to pay, so she gave him 15 synthetic drug pills to pay off the debt. Kien himself was a drug addict, so he agreed.
At about 3:45 p.m. on September 26, 2018, Kien took a car to Nam Can International Border Gate in Tien Tieu village, Nam Can commune, Ky Son district, Nghe An province. While completing immigration procedures to enter Vietnam, Kien was discovered and caught red-handed by the working group of Nam Can International Border Gate Border Guard Station, who confiscated the above evidence. The amount of drugs seized from Kien was determined to be 1.5 grams.
At the trial, Le Trung Kien confessed and admitted his actions. Based on the proceedings at the trial, the aggravating and mitigating circumstances as well as the proposal of the Procuracy, the panel sentenced Le Trung Kien to 24 months in prison.
