Unexpected health benefits of eating durian
Durian can help the body maintain healthy bones, reduce depression and improve sleep, fight cancer, support digestion, and combat aging.
According to Dr. Huynh Tan Vu, Specialist in Internal Medicine, University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital of Ho Chi Minh City - Branch 3, durian contains vitamins such as vitamin C, folic acid, thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, B6, and vitamin A. Important minerals such as potassium, iron, calcium, magnesium, sodium, zinc, and phosphorus are also found in durian. This fruit also contains beneficial nutrients such as phytonutrients, water, protein, and fiber.
Most of the health benefits of durian come from its impressive vitamin and mineral content. Some of the most notable benefits include:
Reduce anemia and promote a healthy pregnancy.
Durian contains high amounts of folate, or folic acid, which is essential in hemoglobin production. Furthermore, the presence of folate in durian is crucial for pregnant women as it helps promote regular tissue development and protects the developing fetal brain and spinal cord.
Maintain healthy bones
Durian contains several trace metals, including calcium and potassium. While the calcium content in durian is very low, the potassium content still meets about 9% of the body's daily requirement.
Reduce depression and improve sleep.
Durian contains amino acids called tryptophan – a natural sleep-inducing compound. Tryptophan is essential for increasing serotonin and melatonin levels. Serotonin is crucial for reducing stress, insomnia, anxiety, cravings, and depression. Additionally, these hormones help regulate sleep function and may be used in the treatment of epilepsy.

Anti-cancer
Durian is rich in antioxidants that reduce oxidative stress on the body's organs and boost the immune system. These include vitamin C, B vitamin complex, and vitamin E, as well as phytonutrients that fight cancer cells.
Supports digestion
Durian is rich in fiber, which is crucial for the normal functioning of the digestive system. Much of the fiber in durian is insoluble fiber, which also reduces the frequency of diarrhea in people who experience loose stools.
Anti-aging
Durian possesses numerous antioxidant properties from vitamins and organic chemical compounds that help reduce the amount of free radicals in the body. This, in turn, reduces the risk of premature aging and delays the appearance of symptoms such as wrinkles, age spots, macular degeneration, hair loss, loose teeth, arthritis, cancer, and heart disease.
Enhancing and promoting fertility
Estrogen is a hormone that aids in conception. Studies show that durian contains high levels of estrogen and acts as a herbal remedy. In addition, durian can enhance libido and stamina, reduce the risk of infertility in both sexes, and improve sperm motility.
However, like any other food, eating too much durian can have side effects. Dr. Vu said that durian is known to be a "heating" food, so eating too much can cause a dry and hoarse throat. This fruit contains a large amount of fiber, so it can cause diarrhea, stomach pain, and bloating when consumed in excess. Although durian does not contain cholesterol or bad fats, it does contain a large amount of calories. Therefore, if eaten frequently, this fruit can cause rapid weight gain.
To ensure good health and maintain a healthy weight, Dr. Vu recommends eating durian in moderation, a maximum of two segments a day, and only once or twice a week. Durian is quite high in sugar and considered a "heating" food, so it should be avoided by people with diabetes, obesity, and high blood pressure. Pregnant women should also avoid it as it can easily cause bloating and indigestion. Durian is also rich in cellulose, so the elderly should limit their consumption as it can cause intestinal blockage and constipation.
