According to the City Electoral Commission, Mr. Khan became Mayor of London with 57% of the votes, surpassing his Conservative opponent Zac Goldsmith with 43.2% of the votes.
Speaking after his election, Mr Khan pledged to be a mayor for “all Londoners”. He said: “I have a burning ambition for London – an ambition that has guided me to become mayor of the city. I want every Londoner to have the same opportunity that the city has given me and my family. It is a chance not just to survive but to build a better future for you, for your families.”
Born in London, Sadiq Khan is the son of Pakistani immigrants. He studied law and has worked as a university lecturer, human rights lawyer and Labour MP.
London, a world financial center, has an eighth of its population as Muslim. Although it is the first time London has a Muslim mayor, Mr. Khan is not the first Muslim to hold a major position in Europe.
The Dutch city of Rotterdam has had a Muslim mayor since 2009. The current British Business Secretary is also a Muslim, Conservative MP Sajid Javid./.
