The class is held at Luong Minh Primary School, Luong Minh Commune. This literacy class has nearly 20 students who are Thai and Khmu ethnic groups. Most of the students are middle-aged and elderly, many of whom have been grandmothers for many years, but they do not hesitate to come to the literacy class. Photo: Dinh Tuan

Ms. Kha Thi Ngoc (born in 1977), in Minh Thanh village, Luong Minh commune, said: “In my village, there are 5 people attending this class. Because we don’t have motorbikes, every morning we walk to Minh Tien village to learn to read and write. The distance is nearly 5km, but we walk and talk at the same time, so it feels close. After finishing school, we walk back. Although it is hard, we learn to read and write, so everyone has to try to go to class regularly. Photo: Dinh Tuan

In this class, only Lo Van Pom (born in 1986) is male. Pom said: "My family is poor and has many siblings, so even though I didn't want to, I had to drop out of school to help my parents with the farm work to have food. Recently, I heard from an official that there was a literacy class, and even though my house was far from the class, I was determined to register to study. Not knowing how to read and write is very difficult, every time I go to the commune to do any paperwork, I have to ask someone to write it for me." Photo: Dinh Tuan

Ms. Nguyen Thi Hien, a teacher at Luong Minh Primary School, was assigned to teach the class. Ms. Hien shared: “Most of the students are old and have not known books or pens for a long time, so in order to teach effectively, I must have a special teaching method to help them understand and remember easily. The way they speak and convey knowledge is also completely different from the students at school and always creates a lively and joyful atmosphere in the class. With this class, I also teach according to the lesson plan, but do not require progress. Because the women and women learn more slowly, if the teacher is not attentive and gentle, it is easy to make them feel discouraged and quit immediately. Our goal is for everyone to know how to read and write, not to follow any program or achievement." Photo: Dinh Tuan

The rough hands, only used to working in the fields, now write quite beautifully thanks to Ms. Hien's correction of each stroke. Photo: Dinh Tuan

Through research, it is known that the reason why women are illiterate is because their economic conditions were too difficult in the past, so they could not go to school. Directly witnessing the enthusiasm of the "students" this year, the youngest of whom is nearly 40 years old, I admire their spirit of learning. I am sure that in the near future, they will no longer feel inferior because they are illiterate, but will be able to read their favorite books and newspapers for entertainment after a hard day's work, to acquire more scientific and technical knowledge and apply it to production. It is thought that local authorities at all levels need to review and support the opening of literacy classes, so that everyone who wants to learn has the opportunity to learn. In order to help people improve their qualifications and understanding, and apply science and technology to production, contributing to socio-economic development and improving the quality of life.
