Up to this point, the spring rice crop in Nghe An has basically been planted. However, due to continuous cold weather, many rice areas have had poor growth.

Closed spring rice area

Up to this point, spring rice production has basically been completed in key rice districts and lowland and delta districts. This year, many localities have even exceeded production plans thanks to favorable irrigation conditions. Of which, the direct-sown rice area is over 40,000 hectares. In addition, in mountainous districts, the spring rice production area is still being implemented and completed.

However, an unfavorable factor affecting production in recent days is the frequent occurrence of severe cold, which has affected the growth and development of spring rice. Many rice fields that were planted in the cold have grown slowly, or even stopped growing.

Besides, although not many, some pests such as thrips and yellow leaves have begun to appear in Nam Dan, Yen Thanh, Dien Chau districts... The cause is due to organic poisoning combined with the effects of cold, cloudy air during the period of newly planted rice.

This spring crop, Do Luong district planted nearly 8,500 hectares of rice. Currently, the rice has taken root and entered the tillering stage. People are focusing on pruning, fertilizing, and taking care of it for the first time. Nguyen Thi Minh, a family with 4 sao of rice, sowed it directly. She said: The rice is growing well, with 2-3 leaves, but in the past few days, it has been raining and cold continuously, and the weather has been gloomy, so she is very worried about pests and diseases.

“Before sowing, I applied lime to the rice. Last time, I also sprayed insecticide to kill golden apple snails. However, this weather often causes pests and diseases, so I have to monitor regularly to promptly detect rice blast disease on the leaves to prevent it,” said Ms. Minh.

Mr. Phan Duc Han - Director of Hung Chinh Commune Agricultural Service Cooperative (Hung Nguyen) said: This year's Spring crop, the Cooperative produced 72 hectares of rice. Currently, 30 hectares of transplanted rice are growing very well, but the area of direct-sown rice has yellow leaves and dead patches.

Focus on care and pest control

In particular, this year's Spring crop is a production season in which rats accumulate and cause a lot of damage. Although the province has provided biological rat poison for localities to organize large-scale prevention, this species continues to thrive.

Along with that, as an alien species introduced for farming, in recent years, the golden apple snail has developed strongly and become a widespread pest, almost every area is harmed by this object; greatly affecting aquatic animals and causing ecological imbalance in the fields. Due to the frequent and continuous use of chemical drugs, some drugs have shown signs of reduced effectiveness in prevention.

According to the investigation of the provincial Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection, golden apple snails have caused damage to 144 hectares, of which 1 hectare is heavily infected; rats have caused local damage to a total area of over 107 hectares and localities have organized prevention and control on over 382 hectares.

In addition, 200 hectares of rice in Hung Nguyen district and Vinh city have been infected with root nematodes, of which 20 hectares are severely infected. Some areas have been damaged by thrips and aphids in Nghia Dan and Yen Thanh districts...

Recently, after inspecting the spring rice production in some localities, Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Nguyen Van De requested the Department of Agriculture and localities and units to coordinate closely and provide enough water for farmers to take care of their rice. At the same time, assign staff to stay in the fields, regularly check, detect and guide farmers to take care of and prevent pests and diseases on crops promptly and effectively. In particular, pay attention to major pests such as rice blast, golden apple snails, leaf rollers, and rats on rice to be able to prevent and control them in time depending on the development, density and appropriate stage.
