Passenger plane from Dubai crashes in Russia: All 62 people on board killed

Flydubai passenger plane FZ981 crashed in the southern Russian city of Rostov-on-Don, killing all 62 people on board.

According to RT, the accident happened on the morning of March 19 when the plane was flying from Dubai to Russia and was preparing to land at the airport in Rostov-on-Don city.

Air traffic control and Rostov-on-Don city officials confirmed that the Boeing 737-800 crashed near the runway after attempting to land for the second time in low visibility conditions.

“According to initial information, the Boeing 737-800 crashed about 50-100m from the runway due to limited visibility conditions,” a source said.

All 55 Russian passengers and seven crew members, including several foreigners, on board the plane were killed, according to the Emergency Situations Ministry.

Firefighters are currently on the scene and have extinguished the fire caused by the crash. The airport remains closed.

According to LifeNews, the plane failed to land the first time and was forced to try again. However, on the second attempt, the tail of the plane scraped the runway, causing the plane to crash and catch fire.

Flydubai has confirmed “an accident involving flight FZ981 flying from Dubai to Rostov On Don”. “We are investigating the incident in detail and will provide further information as soon as we have it,” Flydubai said.
