"Everyone has different hobbies, some like shopping, some like going to spas, getting beauty treatments, some like collecting technology... but I always have the joy and passion for growing plants and clean vegetables..."

These are the shares of Ms. Doan Thanh Huyen (Cau Giay, Hanoi) about her very ordinary and extremely meaningful hobby. Ms. Huyen sowed seeds and grew vegetables on her rooftop of only 50-60m2 and created a vegetable garden that everyone who saw it had to exclaim in admiration.

Nowadays, rooftop gardens are becoming more and more popular. However, not everyone knows how to do it and persevere until the day of harvesting sweet fruits.

As a university lecturer with a large workload and very little free time, with her passion, Ms. Huyen has cleverly taken advantage of her limited time to take care of her small garden.

Each season has its own produce, the vegetable garden on Ms. Huyen's rooftop is always lush and green.

Ms. Huyen said that when she started to transform her rooftop into a garden, she hired a gardening service company to remove the roof, build trellises, shelves, provide soil, fertilizer, etc. After completing the construction, she started to choose the seeds and personally planted and cared for them from the first batch.

Ms. Thanh Huyen’s vegetable garden grows a variety of vegetables. Each season has its own produce. In the summer, she grows water spinach, squash, pumpkin, etc. In the winter, she grows kohlrabi, cabbage, leafy vegetables, lettuce, bitter melon, etc. In addition, she also grows herbs, lemons, chili peppers, and spices.

The vegetable garden has a variety of vegetables such as kohlrabi, cabbage, amaranth, water spinach, herbs...

According to Ms. Huyen, for vegetables and flowers grown in hanging pots, the soil must be smooth and well-drained.

Ms. Huyen said that vegetables are grown to meet the family's food needs, so she pays close attention to choosing clean soil and organic fertilizer for the plants. Fruit trees are the most difficult to grow because they need a lot of water and nutrients, so they have to be watered every day. For vegetables, it is much easier, just need to put up a net to prevent animals such as birds and bats from destroying the vegetables.

The net has a protective effect, preventing birds and bats from destroying vegetables.

Sharing the secret of growing clean vegetables for urban families, Ms. Huyen revealed that after each crop, Ms. Huyen will dig up the soil to dry, leave it fallow for about 1 week or 10 days, then add cow and chicken manure and bio-fertilizer to supplement nutrients. Vegetables should be watered regularly every day in the morning and evening. For vegetables and flowers grown in hanging pots, the soil must be smooth and well-drained.

Although the vegetable garden is not large, thanks to the clever arrangement and decoration of 2 floors, the garden is always full of fragrant vegetables, tubers, fruits and flowers. For several years now, Ms. Huyen's family has not had to go to the market to buy vegetables but can enjoy fresh, clean home-grown vegetables right in the middle of the city.

Ms. Huyen considers growing vegetables a joy and passion, not simply to provide food.

Ms. Huyen happily said that if you want to have a safe meal, you have to grow your own vegetables, however, not everyone has a passion for plants and vegetables. Growing vegetables is not only for the purpose of providing clean food for the family but also for her joy and passion.

That is why, each crop of vegetables, this female university lecturer often grows a lot and shares it with relatives, friends, and colleagues. She believes that bringing joy to others is also bringing joy to herself.

Every vegetable harvest, Ms. Huyen brings "homegrown goods" to share with relatives and friends.

“Everyone has different hobbies, some like shopping, some like going to spas, beauty treatments, some like collecting technology... but I always have joy and passion for growing plants, flowers, vegetables, raising pets at home and exercising. These are joys outside of work, helping life become more vibrant and balanced,” Ms. Huyen shared.
