Tips for choosing and preserving fresh lemons every month
(Baonghean.vn) - MoreOver the past month, lemon prices in the two communes of Hung Yen Nam - Bac, Hung Nguyen district (Nghe An) have dropped, forcing people to "sell them like they're giving them away". If you want to buy lemons to store for later use, this is the right time, but you must make sure you know how to preserve them to keep them fresh for a long time. Here are some good tips for you to refer to:
How to choose fresh and delicious lemons
Hold tight:Fresh lemons should feel firm in the hand, with no spongy or soft areas, have a shiny outer skin, and should not have black spots or look rough.
Use your hand to gently press the shell:If you see essential oils squirting out, this is a quality lemon that has not been soaked in preservatives.
Select origin:Safe cultivation is the key to keeping lemons from being contaminated. Therefore, you should choose fruits with a clear origin (when buying at the supermarket) or ask the seller. This is especially important if you use lemon peels to make cakes or eat them directly.
Choose medium sized lemons:According to the experience of many experienced housewives, the amount of juice in small lemons is often more and of better quality than that in large but light ones. On the other hand, they also believe that oversized lemons are likely to have been previously treated with growth stimulants.
Do not choose lemons with a strong smell:Fruits containing chemicals often have a pungent, unpleasant smell because after spraying, people do not allow enough quarantine time before bringing them to the market. You can check by putting the lemon in a plastic bag, pinching it shut for a moment, then opening it and smelling. If there are residual chemicals, it will have a slightly pungent smell.
Choose lemons with thin skin and no fungus:Check the surface of the lemon carefully to see if there are any mold spots. Eating diseased lemons will not help you accumulate many nutrients and vitamins, but will also put your health at risk.
How to keep lemons fresh for a long time
Use containers with lids:Place the washed lemons in the jar, add enough water to cover the jar and close the lid. Store the jar in the refrigerator. This way, the lemon peels will be constantly hydrated and will not dry out. Therefore, the lemons can be stored for up to 1 month.
However, this is on condition that you do not leave the lemon jar out in the air for too long after each use.
Using vacuum bags:This is a convenient method if you only intend to buy lemons for a few days to a week. After washing the lemons, put them in a vacuum bag, seal it, and place it in the refrigerator. Make sure the lemons are completely dry before putting them in the bag.
Use newspaper or plastic wrap to wrap food:Tear old newspaper in half and place it in the palm of your hand to form a small bag. Place the lemons in the bag and seal it. Arrange the lemons in a plastic bag, tie it tightly, and put it in the refrigerator.
If using plastic wrap, wrap the lemon tightly and completely.
Cardboard boxes and a few kilos of sand to build a house:Spread a layer of sand about 2cm thick on the bottom of the carton, then put the lemons on top but not too close together, then spread another layer of sand on top. Like that, one layer of sand, one layer of lemons and the top layer has a little more sand. This way you can preserve fresh lemons for about 2 months.
If you apply lime to the stem of the lemon before putting it in the sand box, the preservation time will be even longer./.
