Microsoft claims Windows 10 S will be immune to all ransomware

June 11, 2017 20:27

Microsoft claims that "no ransomware can work" on Windows 10 S - the new operating system with enhanced security features that was introduced by the company in May 2017.

According to ZDNet, the software giant confidently declared this when announcing detailed drafts of the next generation of security features in Windows 10 Creators Update to fight against ransomware. The company also announced data on the number of times ransomware was detected on Windows computers worldwide.

Accordingly, in 2016, ransomware detected on Windows computers decreased after the peak in August last year, then started to operate strongly again in February 2017 and doubled in April 2017.

The company has not yet released figures for May, when the WannaCry virus ravaged hundreds of thousands of Windows 7 and Windows 2008 Server computers. However, the company asserted that no Windows 10 customers had been infected with this terrible virus.

It’s unclear when hackers will figure out how to circumvent Windows 10 S’s security, or even start to take an interest in the new operating system, as Windows 7 is still the more widely used and easily hackable operating system. Furthermore, no Windows 10 S PCs have been released yet; the Windows 10 S Surface laptop is available for pre-order, but no third-party hardware manufacturer has officially announced it.

Windows 10 S operating system will obviously be much more secure than regular Windows 10, because it has a security mechanism similar to iPhone when only allowing software installed from Store and running in Sandboxed mode.

Many experts praise this, but it is clear that Windows 10 S is only aimed at a few specific markets. Windows 10 S - unlike Windows RT - runs on the same hardware as regular Windows 10, and can be upgraded to Windows 10 Pro. This operating system will eliminate the risk of classic Win32 software, and provide a unified update mechanism for all the applications it allows to run. It also integrates many of the high-level security features of Windows 10 Pro to serve IT companies managing their systems.

The document that Microsoft provided at the beginning of the article also shows the situation of software downloaded to infect computer systems caused by ransomware. Email is still the most popular method, besides the new methods used by WannaCry and some other ransomware families, such as Spora...

Microsoft divides Windows 10 security into three main categories, including system protection, intrusion prevention, and intrusion expulsion.

System protection includes features like Office 365 URL scanning, Edge browser download blocking...

Anti-intrusion includes Windows Defender, Device Guard, Antimalware Scan Interface; in which the advanced anti-intrusion toolset includes Windows Defender AV behavioral analysis engine, Windows Defender ATP, to help system security experts identify, prevent and quarantine malware before it penetrates and infects the system.

The enhanced security features in Windows 10 are at the heart of Microsoft's efforts to get companies, corporations and users around the world to upgrade to the outdated Windows 7. The recent WannaCry outbreak has become a perfect example of this strategy, and also shows what Windows 10's security system can do.
