Minh Thanh (Yen Thanh): Dozens of hectares of cucumbers died due to the cold

(Baonghean.vn) -In 2015, due to favorable weather, Minh Thanh farmers harvested 20 hectares of cucumbers, earning nearly 1.2 billion VND. However, this year, due to severe cold, nearly 20 hectares of cucumbers that were ready to be harvested for Tet died en masse, causing great losses to the farmers.

Mr. Nguyen Tho Tuy's family in Hamlet 8, Minh Thanh Commune is one of the households with experience in growing spring cucumbers. Every year, before and after Tet, his family earns a significant profit from cucumbers. This year, his family planted 5 sao of cucumbers, thinking that it would be a source of income to buy Tet supplies for the family, but the unusually cold weather has caused all of the family's cucumbers to rot at the roots and wither.

The cucumbers are wilting.

Mr. Phan Viet Son - head of hamlet 8, Minh Thanh commune said: "This spring, the whole hamlet grew 8 hectares of cucumbers, but due to the prolonged cold, most of the cucumbers died, some slowly withered. These were the cucumbers sold for Tet to help people spend, but now they are considered to be wiped out."

This spring crop, Minh Thanh commune has nearly 20 hectares of cucumbers. Recently, the People's Committee of the commune has assigned the commune's agricultural committee to inspect the fields and provide technical guidance to the people. On average, 1 sao of cucumbers, if favorable, people can earn from 7-8 million VND. 1 kg of cucumbers, if sold near Tet, can reach 15-20 thousand VND/kg. However, due to this year's prolonged cold, the entire melon growing area in the commune, which is starting to flower and bear fruit, has died en masse. The total estimated damage is up to over 200 million VND in seeds, labor and planting costs. Melons are soft-stemmed plants with poor resistance to cold and rainy weather, so currently all melon areas in the commune, especially the areas that have flowered and produced fruit, are showing signs of root rot and must be completely removed.
