One Covid-19 patient dies, 17 people 'in very serious condition'

(Baonghean.vn) - According to the Treatment Subcommittee of the National Steering Committee for Covid-19 Prevention and Control, the female patient with Covid-19 "died due to underlying diseases".

The Ministry of Health announced on the afternoon of May 15 that "patient 3839", 89 years old, died due to underlying diseases, the 36th Covid-19 death in Vietnam since the beginning of the epidemic.

According to the Treatment Subcommittee, National Steering Committee for Covid-19 Prevention and Control, the female Covid-19 patient "died due to underlying diseases".

The patient was treated at the Central Hospital for Tropical Diseases from May 13 with the diagnosis: Severe pneumonia due to Covid-19, progressive respiratory failure in a patient with a history of type 2 diabetes, hypertension for many years; lumbar vertebrae collapse (cement injection surgery on April 6).

The patient was intubated, given invasive mechanical ventilation, continuous blood filtration, pleural drainage, antibiotics, antivirals, and ECMO (artificial heart and lung system). The patient died on May 15 with the diagnosis of: Respiratory failure, severe pneumonia due to nCoV, hypertension, diabetes, history of lumbar vertebral collapse that had been operated on.

According to the Treatment Subcommittee, National Steering Committee for Covid-19 Prevention and Control, as of the morning of May 15, about 1,000 Covid-19 patients were being treated at more than 50 facilities nationwide. Of these, 38 cases had progressed to severe condition (4%), 17 cases had a very severe prognosis (1.8%).

The National Hospital for Tropical Diseases is receiving the most Covid-19 patients in the country with over 330 patients. Of these, more than 70% of patients are stable and unchanged, 16 cases have a very serious prognosis. One case at this hospital is on ECMO, "patient 3019", a 54-year-old male from Thai Binh.

This patient had high blood pressure for many years without regular treatment, bilateral kidney stones, chronic kidney failure, had surgery to remove left kidney stones, endoscopic ureteral lithotripsy, kidney drainage... Before being diagnosed with Covid-19, he had been treated at Viet Duc Hospital for 1.5 months. This patient tested positive for nCoV on May 4, and from May 5 until now, he has had to undergo ECMO intervention and blood filtration. The patient's prognosis is very poor due to multiple organ failure, lung damage, and heart damage. In addition, 9 other cases here are on ventilators, most of whom have underlying diseases.

Ho Chi Minh City Hospital for Tropical Diseases is treating a severe case requiring a ventilator, and Da Nang Lung Hospital has two severe patients requiring oxygen.

Among the remaining patients, the majority have no clinical symptoms or mild clinical symptoms. According to data from the Department of Medical Examination and Treatment Management, among the patients being treated, the number of people without clinical symptoms is 59.4%.

Professor Nguyen Van Kinh, from the Covid-19 patient consultation team, said that this time the number of patients is large, their condition is getting worse quickly, and doctors at the Central Hospital for Tropical Diseases are having a hard time treating them.

As of this morning, Vietnam has recorded a total of 3,836 patients, 2,657 recovered, and 35 deaths due to nCoV infection and underlying diseases. Among the patients being treated, 92 cases tested negative for nCoV, of which 49 patients tested negative for the first time; 25 tested negative for the second time and 18 tested negative for the third time.

Last week, the Treatment Subcommittee and leading experts conducted two online national consultations to treat a number of severe Covid-19 patients.
