The Red Devils were linked with Fabinho during the winter transfer window and are now in talks with the Ligue 1 champions in the hope of reaching an agreement before the end of the season, with a transfer fee in the region of £45m.
According to this summer's shopping plan, Mourinho and MU want to complete it early so that the new players have time to integrate and also to avoid being overcharged after the 2018 World Cup.
MU pursued Fabinho since last summer but failed to negotiate a price.
However, the midfielder has now opened the door to the Premier League, stating: "My time at Monaco has been great, but I think it's coming to an end. I need a new challenge."
Fabinho played a key role in Monaco's Ligue 1 triumph last season. He is one of the few names still associated with the club after winning the title. Kylian Mbappe, Benjamin Mendy, Bernardo Silva and Tiemoue Bakayoko have all chosen new destinations.
Conte sits on fire, worried about losing Morata in the big match between Chelsea and Barca
Conte is under pressure to be fired, worried that key striker Alvaro Morata will not recover from his back injury in time for the decisive match between Chelsea and Barca in the Champions League round of 16 (first leg February 21, second leg March 15).
Conte faces the sack, has an important match Chelsea vs Barca ahead, 21/2, which could be without Morata. |
Morata has missed Chelsea's last five games and will be out again this week when they face West Brom. More significantly, Conte is worried about losing his star striker in the Champions League, with the club hosting Barca at Stamford Bridge in 10 days' time.
The 48-year-old coach lamented: "We keep talking about many bad results, but sometimes forget we have to face a serious situation (with Morata's injury). He is extremely important for us but is absent for a long time. I don't know when Morata can return.
Chelsea are trying to find a solution to his back pain. I don't know how long it will take, but I'm worried. Everyone knows how important he is."
