US Africa Command spokeswoman Samantha Reho has just announced that the US has conducted its first airstrikes against Islamic State (IS) militants in Somalia.
According to Ms. Samantha Reho, US forces coordinated with the Somali government to conduct two airstrikes in the northeast of the country on November 3 and killed a number of terrorists.
The first airstrike took place at midnight and the second airstrike was conducted at 11 a.m. local time. The US side is currently assessing the results of the airstrike.
Africa Command's top target in Somalia so far has been the al-Qaeda-linked al-Shabaab Islamist militant group.
Experts say the size of IS's forces remains unclear and IS remains a small force in the region compared to al-Shabaab, however, IS has increased recruitment in the region recently./.
