The new rules include requiring these countries to use US counterterrorism data to screen passengers. The US visa waiver program allows citizens of 38 countries, mostly in Europe, to stay in the US for up to 90 days without a visa, requiring only a travel permit to enter the US.

One of the changes to the program is that participating countries will have to use information provided by the United States to screen passengers entering their countries from a third country. Those who stay longer than the allowed number of days will be required to apply for a visa if they want to enter the United States later.

Countries with a high rate of citizens staying in the US longer than the allowed number of days will be forced to conduct awareness-raising programs on the consequences of overstaying./.
