According to an article published in The American Conservative magazine, the US administration should make it clear to Kiev that it will not provide military aid indefinitely, understanding that this will push Ukraine to enter into necessary negotiations with Russia.

Accordingly, the security agreement between Washington and Kiev will prolong the war in Ukraine and may become a “liability for the United States”. “Despite Washington’s limitations in its ability to support Ukraine, this does not prevent US lawmakers from ignoring those realities by promising long-term support to Ukraine until it achieves a complete victory over Russia. Making promises that cannot be kept will harm Ukraine’s future and discourage it from pursuing necessary diplomacy”, the article said.

The article points out: “While some members of the US Congress have fantasized about Ukraine, policymakers must recognize that Washington’s military resources are limited.” According to the article’s assessment, the US is spending too much money to support Kiev. The magazine emphasizes: “To mitigate this problem, Washington must make it clear to Kiev that it cannot permanently provide Ukraine with the weapons it needs for long-term defense.”

The article also stressed that the latest US military aid package for Ukraine “is unlikely to be tilted in Kiev’s favor.”

According to the article's author, Alex Little, “US aid to Ukraine will probably only be able to strengthen Ukraine's defenses and deter Russian interests in the short term.”

“Logistical hurdles mean that the impact of the assistance will not be immediate,” Little asserted. “So any desire to use aid to retake Russian-held territory is unrealistic.”

“As the Russian economy focuses on the war effort in Ukraine, the difference in fighting capabilities between the two sides is increasing,” the author said. “Given the current reality, Ukraine, with US support, should use its diplomatic leverage before the situation gets worse.”

In late April, US President Joe Biden signed into law legislation passed by the US Congress to resume arms deliveries to Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan. The package is worth $95 billion, including $61 billion for Ukraine. Shortly after the head of state signed the bills, the Pentagon announced it would send Ukraine $1 billion worth of weapons and equipment. Washington then allocated Kiev another $400 million in weapons.
