According to The Politico, the two candidates are former Republican Senator Jon Kyl and retired General Jack Keane. It should be noted that in 2016, Keane also turned down the position of head of the US Department of Defense.
The newspaper added that because the Pentagon chief is one of the most prestigious and influential people in the US government, Kyle and Kian's refusal was "extremely strange".
Former US Defense Secretary James Mattis resigned on January 1 due to disagreements at the White House after Mr. Trump decided to withdraw troops from Syria. Later, several other officials also left the Pentagon.
