"We want the US-Russia relationship to improve, not to be 'tit for tat' like this. There are many areas where the two countries need to cooperate with each other," said Ms. Nauert.
At the press conference, the press spokesman of the US State Department refused to comment on the upcoming countermeasures that Russia will take, including the intention of Russian President Vladimir Putin to appeal to the international arbitration court against the US blocking the operations of some Russian diplomatic facilities in Washington and San Francisco.
Journalists mentioned Russian President Putin's statement when commenting on US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson: "At the moment, he may be working with an ineffective government apparatus. But I hope cooperation and friendship will lead Mr. Tillerson to the right decisions." In response to the request, Ms. Nauert only replied: "That is an interesting comment from the Russian leader."
According to Ms. Nauert, during the review of Russian diplomatic properties, Russian diplomatic staff were invited to join the authorities in examining three buildings in San Francisco, New York and Washington that the United States had asked the Russian government to close.
These inspections were conducted after the buildings were no longer Russian diplomatic property. These inspections were conducted to ensure the security of the buildings and to confirm that the Russian government had liberated the premises.
The United States fully complies with international conventions, US laws and bilateral agreements in these actions, as well as in making its request to Russia to close its diplomatic and consular facilities," - said a representative of the US State Department.
