US worried as Russia boosts trade with North Korea

The above reaction of the State Department and US officials came after a report that trade turnover between Russia and North Korea increased by 73% in the first two months of this year.

Russia has taken over from China, which is now curbing trade with isolated North Korea after President Donald Trump called for pressure on Pyongyang.

“We have reviewed reports that Russia appears to be compensating for China’s sanctions on North Korea,” State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said.

"We are asking Moscow to join us in urging North Korea to abandon its illegal nuclear and missile programs, which are a threat to international peace and security. Only when Pyongyang abandons them can it achieve an economically prosperous future," said Heather Nauert.

The US State Department representative also said it is not yet clear whether Russia's activities violate the UN Security Council resolution imposed on North Korea./.
