The US government announced that it had imposed sanctions on Mohamed Abrini and designated him a foreign “terrorist” of the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS). The Belgian-Moroccan suspect was placed on the US “international terrorist” blacklist.

The US State Department said Mohamed Abrini's accounts and assets in the country will be frozen and all US citizens will be banned from contacting him.

Abrini Mohamed, 31, is believed to be the “man in the hat” captured on surveillance video minutes before twin explosions at Brussels’ Zaventem airport on March 22. The attackers also detonated bombs at a Brussels metro station, bringing the death toll to 32.

Abrini is currently facing a European arrest warrant issued by a French judge for supporting the November 13 attacks in Paris and is currently being held in Belgium.

The US State Department argued: “The imposition of US sanctions is a strong measure against terrorists.”

It is known that Washington has many legal and economic sanctions to punish individuals and groups described as "terrorists". Washington also seeks to cut off their transactions on the US financial system or increase cooperation between security and legal agencies between Washington and foreign governments.
