According to the announcement, since 2012, the US has simply monitored the operation of the power grid control system in Russia. Now, Washington has chosen a different strategy.
"Over the past year, cyber security operations have become much more active. We are working on a scale that no one could have imagined before," the newspaper quoted one of the senior intelligence agency officials as saying.
The Times believes that the United States is calculating to turn Russia into a “dangerous warning” in this way. In addition, the malware could at any time cause an attack on the cybersecurity system “in the event of a serious conflict between Washington and Moscow.”
The introduction of malicious programs into Russia's energy system is considered a "deterrence and warning" mechanism. Many new measures became possible after the US Congress passed the defense budget for fiscal year 2019. This document provides for all activities in cyberspace, aiming to "provide optimal protection against cyber attacks and malicious actions against the United States".
