US deploys elite forces to Syria and Iraq to fight IS
In order to fulfill its commitment to support the campaign against IS, the US government has just deployed an elite special force to Syria and Iraq.
The US Department of Defense said it is deploying about 3,500 elite troops operating in Iraq and 50 commandos to Syria.
This force, considered the "spearhead", will help the Iraqi army step up the fight against IS, carry out attack campaigns, rescue hostages, collect intelligence, and raid IS leaders at any time in Iraq as well as inside Syrian territory.
However, the US Department of Defense affirmed that this is not an escalation of ground combat operations, but rather demonstrates Washington's commitment to stepping up the fight against IS, after the bloody terrorist attacks in Paris (France) on November 13, 2015, which killed 130 people and injured hundreds.

Rejecting criticism of the ineffectiveness of the air campaign in Iraq and Syria, the US Department of Defense said that the international coalition achieved significant success in the last month of 2015, when it effectively supported the Iraqi army to completely liberate the strategic city of Ramadi. Along with that, the air campaign killed more than 10 senior IS leaders, weakening their power.
Observers say that, in the context of increasing fear of terrorism in the US, President Obama, in the last year of his term, will further strengthen the anti-terrorism campaign in Syria and Iraq.
