North Korea announced today (August 9) that it is "carefully considering" a plan to attack Guam, a US territory in the Pacific.

According to Reuters, the statement was made hours after US President Donald Trump told Pyongyang that Washington would respond to any threat with "fire and fury".

The North Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) quoted a North Korean military spokesman as saying that the attack plan would be carried out in multiple directions, consecutively at any time, as soon as leader Kim Jong Un made a decision.

KCNA also quoted another military spokesman as saying that North Korea could launch a preemptive strike if the US showed signs of provocation.

Previously, the Washington Post quoted US intelligence experts as saying that North Korea had developed a nuclear warhead that could be mounted on ballistic missiles, including ballistic missiles capable of reaching US territory.

The Defense Intelligence Agency analysis, completed last month, follows other intelligence assessments that have raised estimates of North Korea’s total nuclear arsenal. The U.S. estimated last month that North Korea’s leadership controls 60 nuclear weapons, although some independent experts believe Pyongyang has far fewer.

Analysts say any US attack on North Korea would be catastrophic not only for North Korea, but also have a major impact on South Korea, Japan and thousands of US troops within range of Pyongyang's retaliation.
