Nam Dan currently has more than 150 hectares of vegetable and spice growing areas. Previously, Nam Dan had grown spice vegetables but planted them in home gardens. Gradually, realizing the high efficiency of spice vegetables, farmers in many communes of Nam Dan have been quick to bring spice vegetables to the fields, where there is a large area and proactive irrigation water, creating concentrated vegetable growing areas. Typical examples are Nam Xuan, Nam Nghia, Xuan Hoa...
At first, people planted traditional vegetables such as perilla, coriander, basil, and chives. Then, realizing that there were many types of vegetables in short supply, such as Vietnamese coriander, Vietnamese coriander, and Vietnamese coriander, people boldly planted and harvested them to sell seasonally to serve the tourist market.
This season, Nam Dan has Vietnamese coriander, Vietnamese coriander, and chives serving restaurants and beer bars with dishes such as balut, eel, fish dishes... which are quite popular.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Phuong, hamlet 2 Nam Xuan, grows Vietnamese coriander all year round and said: Vietnamese coriander is easy to grow, grows quickly, and is harvested continuously. On average, Vietnamese coriander brings in 100,000 VND per day, and with the addition of other vegetables, the family earns about 150,000 VND per day.
Nam Xuan currently has about 30 hectares of spices, including many new types of vegetables. Each year, the commune supplies the market with about 5,000 tons of vegetables. 1 hectare of spices brings in an income of more than 100 million VND.

A bunch of Vietnamese coriander like this is currently sold for 3,000 VND, and at one point it was as expensive as 7,000 VND. Previously, few families grew it, but now there are about a dozen families growing it and it has a fairly stable output. The vegetable is easy to grow, grows well and sprouts quickly. |
In addition to Nam Xuan, many communes have also brought herbs to the fields and focused on taking care of them, considering them as the main source of income. This spring, many types of vegetables such as cabbage, lettuce, tomatoes... have dropped in price in many places, but herbs in Nam Dan are still consumed. One of the reasons is that these vegetables rarely spoil.
In addition to the spices that provide year-round income, cucumbers and chili peppers also bring in quite a high income in Nam Dan. A kilo of cucumbers is currently sold for 8,000 VND, which according to the people is not enough to sell in the summer, especially during the holidays.

Nam Dan also grows monkey leaf vegetable, also known as three-leaf vegetable, which is a new type in the spice plant structure of the district. This vegetable is often used with meat such as goat meat, tamarind meat, and has a good effect on the digestive system. Photo: Tran Chau |
Currently, many communes are continuing to expand the area of spices and vegetables, but it is known that people are selling vegetables mainly to Vinh and Nam Dan markets, so finding information, markets as well as building a clean vegetable brand for Nam Dan needs to be paid more attention by the district and communes to ensure the sustainability of specialized vegetable fields.
