Horrific rape and torture in IS prison
In the violence-ridden detention centers of the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS), prisoners are subjected to brutal rape and torture on a daily basis before being freed, executed or used as suicide bombers.
The details of the IS prison system have just been outlined in a report by the International Center for the Study of Violent Extremism (ICSVE). A series of interviews with 72 individuals, including former IS prisoners, exposed the extremely brutal conditions in IS prison camps.

Among the gruesome scenes mentioned, according to Australia's 9News, were IS guards throwing human body parts into cells, mandatory Sharia law courses for prisoners, and scenes of indiscriminate rape of innocent women. IS also used many brutal torture techniques.
Women who fall into IS hands – including Yazidi girls captured in Iraq, or the wives and daughters of fighters whom IS considers enemies – are often forced into sex slavery after being sold or given as rewards to IS members. Many victims in prison are regularly raped by IS fighters.
According to the ICSVE report, many female prisoners were also beaten in vital areas by female IS fighters.
With such gruesome scenes, an atmosphere of fear always prevails in IS detention camps. Those who are lucky enough to be released suffer serious psychological trauma.

The ICSVE report added that people in areas where IS is based in both Iraq and Syria can be arrested and imprisoned for a variety of crimes. They are often stopped, asked for identification or have their phones searched while on the road.
According to ICSVE, IS has five police units that monitor the activities of civilians: the Islamic police, the military police, the Hisbah (morality police), the assault teams, and the Emni (security forces). Each unit uses its own unique methods of punishment and torture in the centers under its control. Killings are common, and the threat of execution is ever-present.

“I saw things I had never seen before in my life,” one former prisoner told ICSVE. “There was a man on the floor. He had torture marks and bruises on his face, on his body, all over. It looked like they had shot him in the shoulder.” “Another man had his hands and feet tied. He was sitting on an iron chair. He had burns on his chest and stomach. I didn’t know if he was dead or unconscious.”
After being punished and tortured, IS prisoners are often required to attend Sharia law courses before they can be released if they behave well. However, some are unable to pay the fines and are forced to become suicide bombers. Many are executed.
