According to the New York Times, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) is preparing to deal with potential actions at the border after Russia launched a special military campaign in Ukraine.

“Europe’s costliest conflict since the Cold War has spurred NATO to make a full-scale effort to transform itself into a powerful military alliance,” the New York Times wrote on April 17. “The situation in Ukraine is transformative for an organization that has been dormant for years.”

According to the New York Times, NATO is shifting from a strategy of “deterrence by retaliation” to “deterrence by prohibition.” This means NATO will deploy more troops on the border with Russia, integrate more deeply the military plans of the US and its allies, increase military spending, and require more detailed military composition from its allies.

“NATO has not thought seriously about defending its territory, but now it needs to,” the New York Times quoted Ivo Daalder, a former US envoy to NATO, as saying.

In addition, NATO officials admit that the organization does not have enough suitable forces to deploy on the border with Russia.

According to NATO calculations, in theory, the alliance could mobilize 13 army corps of 40,000 to 50,000 troops to participate in the war if necessary, but in reality, this number is lower.

The New York Times said that on this issue, the Commander of NATO forces in Europe, led by General Christopher Cavoli, needs to find a place where it would be more beneficial to deploy existing troops, while ensuring increased combat readiness of the forces.

According to the New York Times, NATO also has to solve some problems in the field of logistics.

Accordingly, even the provision of aid to Ukraine via Poland is facing serious difficulties. Such as congestion in the transport of goods and a lack of rail cars capable of transporting military equipment.

Russia has not commented on the above information.
