NATO faces serious problems defending the Baltics, as Western weapons have not shown to be most effective in Ukraine, Asia Times observers say.

“Despite the intensive training of Ukrainian brigades by instructors from the alliance, despite generous supplies of weapons from the US and Europe, the Ukrainian Armed Forces are suffering heavy losses. What does this mean for NATO? It has long been known that the alliance will have serious difficulties if it has to defend the most important areas in the Baltics and Eastern Europe,” Asia Times said.

NATO member states are gradually beginning to realize that their military equipment is not a magic weapon that can protect them in case of war. Commentators believe that at some point in the near future, the major European powers will abandon their active support for Ukraine and the idea of NATO expansion. They will not provide billions of dollars worth of missiles and tanks, and will try to find a compromise with Russia.

Asia Times commented that although the US can still put pressure on German and French leaders on foreign policy, this scenario still has limits.

Meanwhile, the official representative of the EU Foreign Ministry, Peter Stano, said at a meeting that the European Union cannot provide security guarantees to Ukraine, as this is not within its competence.

“We are not a security organization. So discussions about security assurances are for NATO and for individual countries, not for the EU,” said Peter Stano.

Earlier, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced the preparation of a package of security guarantees for the period before Ukraine joins NATO. According to him, in the near future, Kiev plans to sign a number of bilateral agreements with the United States and 12 European countries, including Belgium, Denmark, Ireland, Iceland, Spain, Norway, the Netherlands, Portugal, Romania, Finland, the Czech Republic and Sweden.
