Analysts from NATO's research agency made the comments in a recently published report by the alliance, recognizing the "significant degree of revival" of the Russian armed forces in the context that some alliance member countries in recent years have lost the skills to plan and conduct large-scale exercises.

"Since 2009, it has become increasingly clear that Russian forces are rapidly recovering from nearly two decades of decline and neglect in the period following the end of the 'Cold War'. The scale of this recovery is considered to be decades in the making," as stated in a study by expert Diego Ruiz Palmer published by the NATO Defense College.

At the same time, during the "Cold War" years, the analyst once assessed the military capabilities of the Soviet Union, now he notes that the Russian Federation is now "the only country in Europe" capable of conducting unannounced exercises and engaging in unified training of forces and combat vehicles of 60 thousand people or more.

The expert also noted that the experience of operations in Syria “created a new basis for the operational skills and logistical capabilities of the Russian military.”
