“The Russian military has shot down a Ukrainian kamikaze UAV targeting a nuclear waste storage facility,” the Energodar city military-civil administration said on its Telegram channel.
The UAV crashed onto the roof of the plant’s special building. The projectile exploded on impact with the roof, but no one was injured and there was no damage to the infrastructure.
The Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, located in the city of Energodar, is currently controlled by the Russian military. In recent days, Ukrainian forces have launched several attacks on the facility using drones, heavy artillery, and multiple rocket launchers. Most of these attacks were repelled by Russian air defenses, but some shells hit infrastructure and the area surrounding the nuclear waste storage facility.
On August 27, Russia sent a letter with evidence of Ukraine's shelling of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant on August 25 to members of the United Nations Security Council.
The New York Times of the United States reported on August 28 that the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has also set up a team to inspect the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in Ukraine. The team will be led by IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi and will include 13 other experts, mainly representatives of neutral countries. Representatives of both the United States and the United Kingdom are not on the list of members.
