Russia begins large-scale military exercises in the Sea of Japan
Large-scale military exercises have begun on the Sakhalin and Kuril Islands in the Sea of Japan, the press service of the Eastern Military District reported.
"On the islands of Sakhalin, Iturup and Kunashir, as well as in the waters of the Sea of Japan, bilateral exercises with the troops and military units of the Eastern Military District and the forces of the Pacific Fleet of Russia have begun," the statement said.

According to the press service, the exercise is one of the stages of checking the troops' combat operations and combat training during the summer training period. During the exercise, the command staff will practice using the joint military group to ensure Russia's military security on its eastern borders.
"The situation in the Far East is simulated based on the confrontation between two hypothetical alliances of states. During the exercise there will be landing operations of naval commandos and tactics," the message reads.
Participants in military exercises
In total, more than 10 thousand servicemen, up to 500 units of military equipment, about 32 aircraft, about 12 different ships of the Russian Pacific Fleet will participate in the exercise. The exercise in the island waters of the Eastern Military District will be held in 2 stages over 5 days.
Earlier Sputnik reported that the modernized frigate of the Pacific Fleet "Marshal Shaposhnikov" destroyed a target simulating an enemy ship in the Sea of Japan with a "Kalibr" cruise missile.
