Russia prepares major overhaul of security and law enforcement agencies

(Baonghean.vn)- On September 19, Russian media quoted sources as saying that the Moscow government is preparing to carry out a large-scale reform of the country's security and law enforcement agencies, in a move that could lead to expanding the power of the Federal Security Service (FSB) and closing the Ministry of Emergency Situations.

According to sources, Russia may create a Ministry of State Security at the headquarters of the FSB, which will take over the authority of the Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) and most parts of the Federal Protective Service (FSO).

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Civil Defense, Emergencies and Disaster Relief of the Russian Federation may be dissolved and its power transferred to both the Ministry of Defense and the Ministry of Internal Affairs. This reform may be completed before the Russian presidential election scheduled for 2018./.
