According to a press release from the Russian Foreign Ministry, the ministry expressed strong protest by sending a note to the US State Department through diplomatic channels.

Russia and the United States have imposed a series of diplomatic sanctions on each other as bilateral relations have continued to deteriorate in recent years.

In December 2016, the administration of former US President Barack Obama imposed sanctions, including expelling 35 Russian diplomats and closing two Russian diplomatic complexes in Maryland and New York, in response to "Russian interference in the US election".

In response to US sanctions, in July 2017, Russia announced its decision to confiscate US diplomatic properties in Moscow and demanded that the US reduce the number of diplomatic staff in Russia.

In September 2017, the administration of US President Donald Trump ordered the closure of the Russian Consulate General in San Francisco, the Russian Trade Office in Washington and a branch in New York.

In March this year, Russia expelled 60 US diplomats and closed its consulate in St Petersburg in response to US moves against Russia.
