Russian Energy Minister Alexander Novak yesterday (April 21) urged Japan to implement the 8-point economic cooperation plan that Japan proposed in 2016.

The call came as Alexander Novak was visiting Japan to discuss economic cooperation, especially in the energy sector.

Minister Alexander Novak said that the two countries need to soon conduct negotiations to implement cooperation projects.

Mr. Novak expressed hope that the two governments would soon discuss it at upcoming events, including a meeting between Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and Russian President Vladimir Putin in late April.

He gave a specific example: with the project to build a liquefied gas plant in the Arctic, Russia needs Japan's technical cooperation to be able to develop advanced technology and create highly competitive products.

Analysts say Russia expects Japan to cooperate economically with it, not only on the disputed islands but also in broader areas based on the principles of the eight-point cooperation plan.

Russia and Japan have begun negotiations to resolve territorial disputes in order to reach a bilateral peace treaty./.
