Earlier on August 4, US State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said that US Assistant Secretary of State Wess Mitchell had summoned Mr. Zhirnov.
Earlier this week, Ms. Nauert welcomed Facebook’s recent decision to remove foreign accounts that were sowing division and violence in the US. She also urged Russia and others to stop what she called “attempts to subvert the democratic process and guidelines of the United States.”
