"On August 24, in accordance with the combat exercise plan, Sineva ballistic missiles and Bulava missiles were successfully launched from the Tula and Yuri Dolgoruky strategic submarines," the Russian Defense Ministry said in a statement, according to TASS news agency.
The Russian Defense Ministry added that the mock missile warhead hit a simulated target in the Arkhangelsk region and the Kamchatka Peninsula in Russia's Far East.
Sineva is a liquid-fueled intercontinental ballistic missile with a range of more than 11,500 km, while Bulava is Russia's newest solid-fueled missile with a range of 8,000-9,300 km.
The Russian Navy conducted the missile launch a day after President Vladimir Putin ordered a symmetrical response to a recent US missile test, which he said showed Washington wanted to deploy previously banned missiles in various parts of the world, according to Reuters.
On August 18, the US military test-fired a cruise missile with a range exceeding the limits set by the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty. The US withdrew from the INF in early August 2019 after years of Washington and Moscow accusing each other of violating the agreement. The INF was signed between the Soviet Union and the US in 1987 to limit the development of land-based missiles with ranges of 500-5,500 km.
